Kathmandu, Ashwin 11: The mayor of Dhorpatan Municipality, Baglung, Devkumar Nepali, has been arrested. He was accused of misusing savings from a cooperative and was arrested on Friday at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India.
He had been on the run for 16 months with his family. A Red Corner Notice had been issued against him by Interpol. After being arrested by Indian police, preparations are underway to bring him back to Nepal in coordination with the Indian consular office.
He is accused of embezzling around 2 billion rupees from the Image Savings and Credit Cooperative in Kaski and Baglung. Last year in the month of Jestha, 524 savers from Kaski and 1,543 from Baglung filed complaints against the cooperative, including its chairman Nepali and other directors.
A special parliamentary investigation committee on cooperative fraud also recommended the government arrest Nepali and proceed with legal action.
