Kathmandu, July 18, Shivam Patel, an 18-year-old cyclist from Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh, India, has achieved a remarkable feat by cycling to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar in Nepal. Shivam, known for his dedication to cycling, has been competing professionally for six years and has already made a name for himself with several marathon and mountain bike race victories.
Record-Breaking Journey
Last year, Shivam set a world record by covering the maximum number of Indian states and territories on his bicycle in one year. He traveled through 22 states and 6 territories from November 1, 2022, to November 1, 2023. This impressive journey earned him the title “Flying Shiva.”
New Achievement in 2024
On May 19, 2024, Shivam embarked on another extraordinary adventure. He cycled from India to Nepal with the goal of reaching Everest Base Camp 5,364 m and Kala Patthar, which stands at 5,644 meters. Despite facing numerous challenges like bad weather, rocky paths, snowfall, rain, and breathlessness, Shivam completed his journey in just 36 days. He proudly hoisted the Indian national flag at Kala Patthar, marking another world record for the young cyclist.
He said, “During my adventurous journey, I found Nepalese people to be very helpful. I received assistance from many people. At Monju, there is a National Park permit checkpoint and an Army check post near Summit Hotel. Summit Hotel helped me get a cycling permit.”
At one point, he was bitten by a snake, but a Nepali person helped him get to a nearby hospital.
Praise and Recognition
Shivam’s achievement has brought immense pride to his hometown of Maharajganj and to India as a whole. Central Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, praised Shivam, stating that his accomplishment will be remembered in golden letters. Chaudhary emphasized that a boy from a small village with a humble background has brought glory to the nation.
In honor of Shivam’s achievement, Sadar MLA Jaymangal Kanaujia announced the construction of a CC road named after Shivam leading to his house in Sukathia. Additionally, he pledged to install solar lights in Shivam’s village, Karauta.
